Die Paketverlustrate, engl. Packet loss rate (PLR), ist in der Nachrichtentechnik ein Maß für die Übertragungsqualität einer elektronischen Datenverbindung. Die Paketverlustrate, die meist in Prozent angegeben ist, gibt an wieviele Pakete eines Datenstroms zwischen einem Sender und Empfängers während der Übertragung verloren gegangen sind, sprich nicht empfangen werden konnten. Sie berechnet sich aus dem Verhältnis der Anzahl verloren gegangener zur Anzahl gesendeter Daten-Pakete, wie z. B. IP-Pakete.

Für die prozentuale Angabe muss nur der Quotient mit 100 multipliziert werden:
PLR=\frac{P_{verloren}}{P_{gesendet}}\cdot 100

Ursache für den Verlust können beschädigte Übertragungsleitungen, oder z. B. ein Störer auf derselben Sendefrequenz sein.

Um eine gute Verbindung zu haben sollte dieser Fehlerwert so klein wie möglich, am besten 0 sein. Für IP-Telefonie gelten nach ITU G.114 Paketverlustraten bis zu 5 % noch als akzeptable Qualität.
