Das Authenticated Mail Transfer Protocol (AMTP) ist ein Verfahren zur Absicherung der Urheberschaft von E-Mails.
Das Protokoll wurde von Bill Weimann entwickelt und soll das Aufkommen von Spam reduzieren helfen, indem es den Absender verifiziert und authentifiziert, und somit ermittelbar macht.
Die Verbindung zwischen Server und Client wird als authentifizierte Verbindung aufgebaut (ähnlich SSL); nur wenn der Absender ein Zertifikat hat, wird die E-Mail weitergeleitet und zugestellt.
Dass die Internet-Welt eine Mail-Authentifizierung benötigt, steht außer Frage. Diskutiert wird in international besetzten Gremien, welcher der mehreren vorliegenden Vorschläge nun verwirklicht werden soll.
