Rokel

Der Rokel ist der größte Fluss in Sierra Leone.

Von den Loma Mountains fließt er ungefähr 386 Kilometer in südwestlicher Richtung und zusammen mit einem kleineren weiteren Fluss, dem Port Loko Creek, formt er einen größeren Ästuar, auch Sierra Leone River genannt. Dieser stellt den größten natürlichen Hafen auf dem afrikanischen Kontinent dar. Sierra Leones Hauptstadt Freetown liegt am Eingang dieses Ästuars, ungefähr 40 Kilometer flussabwärts von der Mündung des Rokel und Port Loko Creek.

In Anlehnung an den Order of the British Empire wird Sierra Leones auch „Order of the Rokel“ genannt.
