Rosamund Clifford, eigentlicher Name Lady Jane de Clifford (* um 1150 auf Clifford Castle [1] in Herefordshire; † 1176 im Kloster von Godstow bei Oxford) war eine Mätresse des englischen König Heinrich II. Sie wurde durch ihre Schönheit auch The Fair Rosamund oder die Rose of the World genannt.

Leben

Rosamund war die jüngste Tochter des Welsh Marches-Lord Walter FitzRichard de Clifford (1127 – 1187) und seiner Frau Lady Margaret de Tosny. Sie wuchs zusammen mit ihren beiden Schwestern, Amice († 1185) und Lucy († 1195), in Herefordshire auf. Während eines Feldzugs gegen Wales im Jahr 1165 lernte sie den englischen König Heinrich II. (1133–1189) auf Clifford Castle kennen. Ihre Klugheit und Schönheit verzauberten den König und er machte sie zu seiner heimlichen Mätresse. Die Liaison wurde öffentlich, nachdem die Königin Eleonore von Aquitanien 1173 die Revolte ihrer Söhne unterstützte. Die Gründe für ihre Parteinahme gegen Heinrich sind nicht klar. Vielleicht fühlte sie sich - wie ihre Söhne - von der Machtausübung ausgeschlossen; möglicherweise war sie auch über den Ehebruch ihres Mannes, der in dieser Zeit im Bann von Rosamund Clifford stand, erbost. Nach der Niederschlagung des Aufstandes wurde sie bis zum Ende der Regierung Heinrichs II. unter Bewachung gestellt. 1175 dürfte Heinrich eine Scheidung erwogen haben, doch blieb Eleonore weiterhin Königin. Rosamund zog sich ins Kloster zurück; wo sie 1176 starb und bestattet wurde.

Ab dem 14. Jahrhundert kursieren unzählige Gerüchte, Balladen, romantische Geschichten und Legenden, wonach die eifersüchtige Königin Eleonore ihre Rivalin, Rosamund Clifford, aus Eifersucht im königlichen Palast zu Woodstock vergiftet habe. Erst im 19. Jahrhundert wurden sie als historisch unhaltbar widerlegt.
