Die BSI SA ist die älteste Bank im Kanton Tessin. Das 1873 in Lugano als Banca della Svizzera Italiana gegründete Bankinstitut gehört seit 1998 vollständig zum italienischen Versicherungskonzern Generali und konzentriert ihre Geschäftstätigkeit auf das Private Banking und die Vermögensverwaltung.

Als international tätige Bank ist die BSI SA mit einem Netz von 31 Niederlassungen und Tochtergesellschaften in Europa, Fernosten sowie Mittel- und Südamerika vertreten. Das Unternehmen beschäftigte auf Ende 2008 2'353 Mitarbeiter und verwaltete Vermögen in der Höhe von rund 94 Milliarden Schweizer Franken.

Nachdem die BSI SA bereits im August 2006 die ebenfalls in Lugano ansässige Banca Unione di Credito übernommen und vollständig integriert hat, kündigte sie im November 2007 die vollständige Übernahme der Banca del Gottardo an. Die vollständige Integration der Banca del Gottardo wurde per Mitte 2008 vollzogen.[1]
