Simplified English

Simplified English ist eine kontrollierte Sprache, bei der das natürliche Englisch für einen bestimmten Zweck auf eine standardisierte Teilmenge begrenzt wird. Es wurde in den 1980er Jahren für Wartungsdokumentationen in der Luft- und Raumfahrtindustrie entwickelt und ist heute ein Standard der Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD). Es ist nicht mit Basic English zu verwechseln, welches für den allgemeinen Sprachgebrauch geschaffen wurde.

Der Zweck des Simplified English ist es,

  • Mehrdeutigkeiten zu verringern
  • die Verständlichkeit für Nicht-Muttersprachler zu erhöhen
  • Übersetzungen billiger und einfacher zu gestalten
  • automatisierte Übersetzungen zu ermöglichen

Aufbau und Regeln

Das Simplified English verfügt über einen festgelegten Wortschatz, bei dem jeder Begriff genau eine Bedeutung hat (kontrolliertes Vokabular). Zum Beispiel darf „close“ in „Close the door (Schließe die Tür)“ verwendet werden, nicht aber in „Do not go close to the landing gear (Gehe nicht zu nahe an das Fahrwerk heran)“. Weiterhin sind nur bestimmte grammatische Formen und eine definierte Syntax zugelassen.

Geschichte und Anwendung

Simplified English wurde in den 1980er Jahren von der European Association of Aerospace Manufacturers (AECMA) als Dokumentationsstandard der Luft- und Raumfahrtindustrie festgelegt (AECMA Simplified English). Die AECMA übernahm den Standard von Fokker, die ihn wiederum auf früheren kontrollierten Sprachen aufgebaut hatten, besonders auf Caterpillar Fundamental English. 2005 ging die AECMA in der Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe (ASD) auf, wodurch der Standard in ASD Simplified Technical English (STE) umbenannt wurde. Er ist in der ASD Specification STE100 geregelt.
