Spiral Island ist eine künstliche Schwimmende Insel in einer Lagune des karibischen Meers, einen Kilometer südlich von Puerto Aventuras, nördlich von Cancún im mexikanischen Bundesstaat Quintana Roo.

Die erste Insel wurde 1998 von dem ausgewanderten Briten Richie Sowa angelegt. Der Musiker, Künstler und Zimmermann aus Middlesbrough schuf die 16 mal 20 Meter große Insel in vierjähriger Arbeit aus Bambusrohren und Holzplatten. Der bekennende Umweltschützer und Recycler Sowa pflanzte auf der Insel verschiedene Pflanzen wie Mangroven an und errichtete auf ihr ein zweistöckiges Haus, einen Solarherd und eine selbstkompostierende Toilette.

Für den Auftrieb sorgten 250.000 Plastikflaschen. Mit Sand beschichtet wog die Konstruktion etwa 60 Tonnen. Die Spirale war das Baukonzept zur Vergrößerung der zunächst wesentlich kleineren schwimmenden Plattform. Der Name der Insel wird zugleich auch mit den Theorien von Abraham Maslow über die menschlichen Bedürfnisse erklärt (das Bild einer Spirale für die Persönlichkeitsentwicklung und die Suche nach der Vollkommenheit geht jedoch auf Alfred Adler zurück).

Die Insel wurde im Juli 2005 durch den Hurrikan Emily zerstört. Sowa schaffte es bis 2008, eine neue Insel zu errichten.
