The Crusaders sind eine US-amerikanische Fusion-Jazz-Gruppe, die vor allem in den 70er Jahren durch die Verbindung von Jazz und Funk erfolgreich waren.

Geschichte

Die Gründungsmitglieder der späteren Crusaders, Keyboarder Joe Sample, Schlagzeuger Stix Hooper, Tenor-Saxophonist Wilton Felder und Posaunist Wayne Henderson fanden sich bereits zu Highschoolzeiten in ihrer Heimatstadt Houston (Texas) unter dem Namen „The Modern Jazz-Sextet“ zusammen. Ihre ersten professionellen Erfahrungen sammelten sie in den frühen 50er Jahren, als sie unter dem Namen „The Nighthawks“ als Showband in Dance-Clubs arbeiteten.

Joe Sample, der sich vorgenommen hatte, eines Tages als einer der besten Musiker der Welt anerkannt zu werden, empfand die Arbeit als Showmusiker aber zunehmend als Zeitverschwendung und suchte nach einer Möglichkeit zum musikalischen Aufstieg. Als Dick Bock, der Gründer von Pacific Jazz-Records, ihnen dann im Jahre 1958 einen Plattenvertrag in Aussicht stellte, nahmen sie die Gelegenheit wahr und zogen gemeinsam nach Los Angeles (Kalifornien). Es sollte aber noch Jahre dauern, bis sie schließlich im Jahre 1961, um einen Bassisten und Gitarristen ergänzt, ihre ersten Aufnahmen bei der Pacific machen durften.

Mit der Frontline aus Tenor-Saxophon und Posaune prägten sie jetzt unter dem neuen Namen „The Jazz-Crusaders“ ihren eigenen Stil und fanden damit schnell Anerkennung und kommerziellen Erfolg.

Im Jahre 1968 ließ Pacific Jazz-Records das Wort Jazz fallen, „The Crusaders“ waren geboren.

Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres 18. Albums verließ Wayne Henderson im Jahre 1975 die Gruppe, um seiner Arbeit als Produzent ungehindert nachgehen zu können. Sein Austritt hinterließ eine Lücke, die den Charakter der Gruppe auf Dauer veränderte. Als der Drummer Stix Hooper die Gruppe im Jahre 1983 schließlich ebenfalls verließ, kündigte sich das Ende der Crusaders langsam an.

Seit 1961 haben die Crusaders über 40 Alben veröffentlicht, davon 19 in der frühen Zeit bis 1970 unter dem Namen „The Jazz Crusaders“. Ihren größten Erfolg hatten sie im Jahre 1979 mit „Street Life“ unter der Beteiligung der Sängerin Randy Crawford.

Aktuell tourt eine von Wayne Henderson geleitete Band unter dem gleichen Namen.
