Tonic Water ist ein chininhaltiges Erfrischungsgetränk mit einem leicht bitteren Geschmack.

Früher gehörte Tonic Water (englisch tonic bedeutet „kräftigend, stärkend“, siehe auch Tonikum) zur Standardausrüstung vieler europäischer Kolonialarmeen. Der damals noch höhere Chiningehalt des Getränkes war ein wirksamer Schutz gegen die Malaria. Um diese Wirkung zu erzielen, musste das Tonic Water regelmäßig getrunken werden. Wegen des bitteren Geschmacks wurde es oftmals mit Gin zu Gin Tonic gemischt. Eine Legende besagt, dass britische Seeleute den daraus abgeleiteten Longdrink erfanden.

Ein großer Produzent von Tonic Water ist die in Großbritannien beheimatete Firma Cadbury Schweppes. In dem von ihr hergestellten Tonic Water sind 6,8 mg Chinin (als Alkaloid) auf 100 ml enthalten.[1]

Tonic Water leuchtet wegen des Chiningehaltes unter UV-Licht bläulich.
