Der Titel Earl of Moray (ausgesprochen „Murry“) wurde in der Peerage of Scotland mehrmals vergeben. Vor der Aufnahme der Grafschaft in die Peerage gab es bereits mehrere Personen, die über Moray mit dem Titel Mormaer herrschten.
Erster ernannter Titelträger war Thomas Randolph. Seine letzte Nachfahrin war Elizabeth Stewart, 7. Countess of Moray, deren Ehemann ebenfalls als Earl anerkannt wurde. Als dieser 1455 in einer Schlacht gegen seinen Souverän fiel, wurde der Titel eingezogen.
Nächster Titelträger war James Stewart, der Sohn von Königs Jakob IV.. Dieser Earl starb ohne Nachkommen, der Titel erlosch. Der nächste Earl of Moray war dann George Gordon, 4. Earl of Huntly. Gordon verlor die königliche Gunst, er wurde 1462 getötet, der Titel erlosch.
Die bisher letzte Verleihung war zugunsten eines weiteren James Stewart, dem unehelichen Sohn von König Jakob V.; mit dieser Verleihung waren die Titel Lord Abernethy and Strathearn (1562), Lord Doune (1581) und Lord St Colme (1611) verbunden. Darüber hinaus hält Lord Moray die Titel Baron Stuart, of Castle Stuart im County Inverness; da dieser Titel zur Peerage of Great Britain gehört, hatten die Earls of Moray bis zur Peerage Act 1963 einen Sitz im House of Lords.
Der wohl bekannteste Earl of Moray war James Stewart, 2. Earl of Moray, der Ehemann von Elizabeth Stewart, 2. Countess of Moray, der Earl aus dem Recht seiner Ehefrau (iure uxoris) war, da er der Titelheld einer berühmten Ballade ist: „The Bonny Earl of Murray“ (mit „Murray“ als Variante von „Moray“).
Der Familiensitz ist Doune Lodge bei Doune, Stirling.
