Turau

Turau oder Turow (weißrussisch: Тураў; russisch: Turov; litauisch: Turava) ist eine Stadt im Süden der Republik Weißrussland im Gebiet der Prypjatsümpfe bei Schitkawitschy im Bezirk Homel.

Turau ist die alte Hauptstadt der slawischen Dregowitschen und wurde der Sage nach von einem Herzog Tur gegründet. Um 900 kam es unter die Herrschaft der Rjurikiden der Kiewer Rus und wurde 1054 Residenz des Teilfürstentums Turow-Pinsk, das 1319 an Litauen kam. 1005 wurde Turau der erste römische-katholische Bischofssitz im heutigen Weißrussland. Einer der ersten Bischöfe der orthodoxen Kirche war Kyrill von Turau.

1502 und 1521 wurde Turau von den Tataren geplündert; im 17. Jahrhundert litt es unter den Kriegen mit Moskau und sank zur Kleinstadt herab.
