Die US Environmental Protection Agency oder kurz EPA bzw. USEPA ist eine Organisation der Regierung der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika zum Schutz der Umwelt und zum Schutz der menschlichen Gesundheit.

Die EPA wurde unter Präsident Nixon am 2. Dezember 1970 gegründet. Sitz der Behörde ist Washington D. C. Leiter (Administrator) ist Stephen L. Johnson, sein Vertreter ist Marcus Peacock. Bei der Behörde sind 17.000 Mitarbeiter beschäftigt.

Sie soll die Umsetzung von Umweltschutzgesetzen begleiten. Seit 1982 besteht das Office of Criminal Enforcement, Forensics and Training, abgekürzt OCEFT, eine eigene Vollzugs- und Ermittlungsbehörde. Sie hat 1988 volle Polizeibefugnisse erhalten.[1]

Kritik

Das 1970 ins Leben gerufene Federal Clean Car Incentive Program, welches amerikanische Studien für ein Elektro-Hybridfahrzeug umzusetzen versuchte, wurde – obwohl anfänglich stark forciert – 1976 durch die Umweltschutzbehörde der USA gestoppt.[2]
