Venesat-1 (auch als Simón Bolívar bezeichnet), ist der erste Satellit Venezuelas. Er wurde von der chinesischen China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation[1] auf Grundlage des Typs Dong Fang Hong 4 entwickelt und ist der erste, den China für ein lateinamerikanisches Land gebaut hat.[2] Es handelt sich dabei um einen Kommunikationssatelliten, der in einem geosynchronen Orbit arbeitet und der Fernseh- und Telekommunikationsdienste in Venezuela anbieten soll. Als Gesamtpreis wurde mit China 325 Millionen Euro vereinbart.

Der Start erfolgte am 29. Oktober 2008 um 16:53 Uhr UTC mit einer chinesischen LM-3B vom Startplatz LA-2 des Kosmodroms Xichang aus.[3]

Venesat-1 wird vom venezolanischen Wissenschafts- und Technologieministerium betrieben.[1] Er besitzt zwölf C- und 14 Ku-Band-Transponder, hat eine Masse von 5100 kg und eine erwartete Lebensdauer von 15 Jahren.[1]
