Battle of Surfaces

The Battle of Surfaces (Deutsch: Die Schlacht der Beläge) wird ein Tennismatch genannt, das am 2. Mai 2007 in Palma, zwischen den Tennisprofis Roger Federer und Rafael Nadal stattfand.

Da Federer als Rasen- und Nadal als Sandspezialist gilt, hatte der Veranstalter, für ca. 1,2 Millionen Euro, den Tennisplatz zu einer Hälfte mit Rasen und zur anderen Hälfte mit Sand auslegen lassen (daher der Name des Matches). Gespielt wurde über drei Sätze, wobei beide Spieler auf beiden Belägen spielen mussten. Nadal gewann das Spiel, vor 7200 Zuschauern, im dritten und entscheidenden Satz im Tie-Break mit 12:10 (7-5) (4-6) (7-6). Während Federer auf beiden Belägen gleich viele Punkte gewann, konnte Nadal zwar auf Gras sieben Ballwechsel weniger für sich entscheiden, machte aber auf Asche zwölf Punkte mehr.

Der Name Battle of the Surfaces ist eine Anlehnung an das Tennismatch „Battle of the Sexes“, aus dem Jahre 1973, indem die amerikanische Tennisspielerin Billie Jean King gegen den ehemaligen Wimbledonsieger Bobby Riggs antrat.
