William James West

William James West (* 1793; † 1848) war ein englischer Arzt und Chirurg, der in Tonbridge (Grafschaft Kent) lebte.

Nach ihm wurde das West-Syndrom, eine besondere Form von Epilepsie im Säuglings-/Kleinkindalter, benannt. Er beobachtete die Anfälle im Jahre 1841 bei seinem damals etwa vier Monate alten Sohn und beschrieb sie auch unter wissenschaftlichen Gesichtspunkten.[1] West suchte den Rat von Charles Mansfield Clarke (1782-1857) und Charles Locock (1799-1875), ohne jedoch Hilfe zu finden. Clarke prägte seinerzeit den Ausdruck Salaam-Tic für die Krampfanfälle.[2]
