Wind Jet ist eine italienische Billigfluggesellschaft mit Sitz in Catania auf Sizilien.

Geschichte

Wind Jet wurde 2003 als Nachfolgerin der Air Sicilia gegründet. Der erste Flug wurde im Juli 2003 auf der Strecke Catania-Rom absolviert. Die Fluggesellschaft hat sich seitdem zur viertgrößten italienischen Fluglinie entwickelt. Für 2006 wurden 2.600.000 Passagiere erwartet, was gegenüber 2005 einen Anstieg um 30% bedeuten würde.

Ziele

Die Flughäfen Catania, Palermo und Forlì dienen der Fluggesellschaft als Basen. Sie fliegt Ziele in Italien und Europa an, etwa Pisa, Rom, Madrid, Moskau oder Paris. In Deutschland ist Wind Jet im Linienverkehr derzeit nur in Berlin anzutreffen. 2011 wird das Netz in Deutschland ausgebaut. Ab April 2011 wird die Strecke Rimini-Köln, mit einem A320, bedient. Ab Rimini bietet Wind Jet außerdem einen direkten Anschlussflug nach Palermo an.

Zwischenfälle

  • Am 24. September 2010 ist ein Airbus A319-132 mit der Registrierung EI-EDM bei der Landung in Palermo verunglückt. Das Flugzeug kam neben der Landebahn auf. Zum Zeitpunkt der Landung soll heftiger Regen geherrscht haben. 30 Menschen wurden bei dem Zwischenfall verletzt.
