Branen sind mehrdimensionale Gebilde, die im Rahmen von Weiterentwicklungen der Stringtheorie existieren. Das Wort Bran ist eine Ableitung des Wortes Membran.

In Hinsicht auf die M-Theorie kann man die Branen (11-dimensionale M-Branen) auch mit Membranen auf der Erde vergleichen. Solche Branen könnten auf ihrer Struktur auch Universen "gespeichert" haben.

D-Branen stellt man sich als niederdimensionale, dynamische Objekte in einem sogenannten Bulk, einer höherdimensionalen Raumzeit, vor. Unser Universum bestehe demnach möglicherweise aus einer oder mehreren D3-Branen (den wahrnehmbaren drei Raumdimensionen entsprechend).
