British Naval Intelligence Department

Das Naval Intelligence Department (NID, dt. britischer Marine-Nachrichtendienst) war ein britischer Geheimdienst der Royal Navy.

Die Behörde wurde 1882 unter dem Namen Foreign Intelligence Committee gegründet und 1887 in Naval Intelligence Department umbenannt. Der erste Direktor der Behörde war Captain William Henry Hall.

Im ersten Weltkrieg war der NID verantwortlich für die erfolgreiche Entschlüsselung geheimer Nachrichten aus dem deutschen Reich. Der Unterabteilung Room 40 gelang es, das Zimmermann-Telegramm zu entschlüsseln, was zum Kriegsbeitritt der Vereinigten Staaten beitrug.

Ian Fleming, der Schöpfer des fiktiven Geheimagenten James Bond, arbeitete dort während des Zweiten Weltkrieges.

1965 wurde die Behörde aufgelöst.
