Die British thermal unit ist eine Einheit der Energie. Ihr Einheitenzeichen ist Btu oder BTU, ihr Formelzeichen W. Die Btu gehört nicht zum SI-System und ist definiert als die Wärmeenergie, die benötigt wird, um ein britisches Pfund Wasser um 1 Grad Fahrenheit zu erwärmen. Da auf Grund der temperaturabhängigen Wärmekapazität diese Energie je nach Temperatur des Wassers unterschiedlich ist, existieren mehrere Definitionen der Btu.

Die International (Steam) Table Btu wurde nach der International (Steam) Table Kalorie (calIT) als 1055,05585262 Joule definiert.[1]

Bei der Spezifizierung von Wärmepumpen (speziell Klimaanlagen) wird oft bei Importgeräten die Kühlleistung (fehlerhaft) in Btu angegeben. Gemeint ist hier BTU pro Stunde (BTU/h).

1000 BTU/h ≈ 293 W

Auch für zu kühlende Geräte von Rechenzentren wird die in Wärme abgegebene Verlustleistung in BTU/h angegeben.

Der Erdgas-Verbrauch wird manchmal auch in mmBTU (million British thermal units; mm kommt von tausend tausend) angegeben. 1 mmBTU entspricht 26,4 Standard Kubikmeter Gas, basierend auf einem Energieinhalt von 40 Megajoule/m³.
