Byron Bay ist ein Badeort an der Nordküste des australischen Bundesstaates New South Wales mit 4.981 Einwohnern und liegt am östlichsten Punkt des australischen Festlandes (Cape Byron), ca. 800 km nördlich von Sydney und 200 km südlich von Brisbane. Der nächstgelegene Flughafen liegt ca. 40 km südlich in Ballina.

Der Name der Stadt stammt von John Byron, dem Großvater des Dichters Lord Byron, einem britischen Kapitän und Weltumsegler des 18. Jahrhunderts. Im Verwaltungsbezirk Byron Shire leben etwa 32.000 Menschen (Stand 2006).

Ein im Jahr 1901 gebauter Leuchtturm, das Cape Byron Light, ist weithin sichtbar und gilt als eine der Hauptsehenswürdigkeiten dieser kleinen Stadt. Durch die große und sehr lang gezogene offene Bucht ist Byron Bay ein ideales Surferparadies. Cape Byron ist auch als Ziel für Whale Watching bekannt, da Cape Byron regelmäßig von Buckelwalen passiert wird. Die Stadt hat in Australien einen alternativen Ruf, da viele Aussteiger und Künstler sich hier niedergelassen haben. Aufgrund des alternativen Rufes und der Nähe zu Nimbin (45 km) gilt es als beliebtes Ziel für Backpacker (Rucksacktouristen).

Seit 1989 findet hier, immer um Ostern herum, ein mehrtägiges, bedeutendes Open-Air-Musikfest statt, das East Coast Blues & Roots Music Festival.
