Abbreviator

Abbreviatoren (lat.) waren die wichtigsten Beamten der päpstlichen Kanzlei. Sie waren hauptsächlich, seit dem Jahr 1350, für die Anfertigung der Entwürfe zu den päpstlichen Bullen zuständig. Darüber hinaus bearbeiteten sie weithin selbständig einfache Justizsachen.

Poggio Bracciolini, der 1403 an die Römische Kurie kam, war zeitweilig als Abbreviator tätig. Das von Pius II. gegründete und von Sixtus IV. wiederbelebte Abbreviatorenkolleg wurde 1908 von Papst Pius X. aufgelöst, die Aufgaben auf die Apostolischen Protonotare übertragen.
