Balvenie Castle ist eine bei Dufftown gelegene Burgruine. Sie zählt zu den ältesten steinernen Burgen in Schottland.[1]

Geschichte

Die Burg wurde wahrscheinlich in der zweiten Hälfte des 12. Jahrhunderts durch Alexander Comyn errichtet. Aus dieser Zeit stammt noch die heute erhaltene Ringmauer.

Als Unterstützer von John Balliol verloren die Comyns ihren Besitz nach dem Sieg von König Robert the Bruce in den Schottischen Unabhängigkeitskriegen im Jahr 1306. Robert the Bruce übertrug Balvenie Castle an seinen Gefolgsmann James Douglas, genannt the Black Douglas und Begründer der gleichnamigen Familie.

Nach seinem Mord an William Douglas, 8. Earl of Douglas nahm König James II. die Ländereien der Douglas in Besitz und verteilte sie an seine Gefolgsleute. Balvenie Castle fiel daraufhin an John Stewart, 1. Earl of Atholl und blieb für die nächsten 250 Jahre im Besitz der Stewarts. 1562 war Maria Stuart Gast auf Balvenie Castle.[2]

1614 ging die Burg durch Kauf an Robert Innes of Invermarkie, dessen Familie die Burg allerdings 1687 wieder verkaufen musste. Neue Besitzer wurden die Duffs of Braco. Während des Jakobitenaufstands 1689 setzten sich Anhänger der Stuarts in Balvenie Castle fest. Nach dem Selbstmord von William Duff im Jahr 1718 wurde Balvenie Castle verlassen und war bereits wenige Jahre später eine Ruine. Während des letzten Aufstands der Jakobiten im Jahr 1746 wurde die Burg nochmals von königlichen Truppen genutzt, danach aber endgültig verlassen.

Seit 1929 befindet sich die Ruine im staatlichen Besitz und wird durch die staatliche Denkmalschutzbehörde „Historic Scotland“ verwaltet. Gegen Eintritt kann Balvenie Castle besichtigt werden. Direkt benachbart sind die Whiskydestillerien Glenfiddich und - nach der Burg benannt - Balvenie.
