Bhuj ist eine Stadt im indischen Bundesstaat Gujarat mit rund 147.000 Einwohnern (Volkszählung 2011). Sie ist Verwaltungssitz des Distrikts Kachchh und liegt in einer Wüstenregion nahe der Grenze zu Pakistan.

Bhuj ist ein Inland-Verkehrsknoten für Handelsware und entsprechend Sitz vieler Transportunternehmen. Weitere bedeutende Wirtschaftszweige sind der Getreidehandel und das Kunsthandwerk. Ebenfalls wichtig sind die Investitionen von im Ausland lebenden Indern und die Bedürfnisse der ansässigen Militärstützpunkte.[3] Touristisch bekannt ist die Stadt für seine Altstadt, Paläste und Grabmale der Herrscher. Viele der Sehenswürdigkeiten wurden bei einem Erdbeben 2001 beschädigt, ebenfalls hat die Wirtschaft gelitten.[3]

Geschichte

Die Karawanen-Handelsstadt Bhuj wurde Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts von Rhao Kengarji I. zur Hauptstadt von Kachchh erhoben.[4] 1819 wurde Bhuj von den Briten eingenommen.[5] Im Januar 2001 zerstörte ein Erdbeben große Teile von Bhuj und über 13.805 Menschen kamen nach offiziellen Angaben ums Leben.[6]

Bildung

Bhuj ist Sitz der Krantiguru Shyamji Krishna Verma Kachchh University mit 28 Colleges und mehr als 15.000 Studenten im Jahr 2004.[7]
