Die Chalice Well (dt. „Kelchquelle“) ist eine heilige Quelle die sich am Fuß des Glastonbury Tor in der englischen Grafschaft Somerset befindet. Das Wasser der Quelle ist stark eisenhaltig und weist deshalb eine rötliche Färbung auf. Die Quelle wird von Gärten umgeben. Sowohl die Quelle als auch die Gärten stehen unter der Verwaltung des 1959 von Wellesley Tudor Pole gegründeten Chalice Well Trusts.[1] Archäologische Untersuchungen haben nachgewiesen, dass seit rund 2.000 Jahren Menschen in der Nähe der Chalice Well leben. Heute gehört die Chalice Well zu den bekanntesten und meist besuchten Quellen Großbritanniens.[2]

Legenden

Um die rötliche Färbung des Wassers ranken sich zwei Legenden. Einer Legende nach vergrub Josef von Arimathäa den Heiligen Gral an dieser Stelle, woraufhin die Quelle entsprang. Der zweiten Legende nach wusch Josef den Gral im Quellwasser, woraufhin sich dieses rot verfärbte.[1] Dem Wasser wird eine Heilwirkung nachgesagt.[2]
