The (English) Congregation war ein kurzlebiges Studioprojekt der beiden britischen Komponisten Roger Cook und Roger Greenaway sowie des Produzenten John Burgess und des Sängers Brian Keith.

Für ihren größten Hitparadenerfolg Softly Whispering I Love You (1971 UK Platz 4[1], 1972 D Platz 10[2], USA Platz 29[3]) setzten „The Congregation“, wie sie sich zu Beginn nannten, einen gemischten neunzigköpfigen Chor und ein Orchester ein. Ab dem Frühjahr 1972 erfolgte ihre Umbenennung in „The English Congregation“ , da man Verwechslungen mit The Mike Curb Congregation befürchtete[4][5].

Der Song wurde ein Millionenseller und ist ein klassisches One Hit Wonder. Allerdings hatten die Autoren Cook und Greenaway das Lied bereits 1967 unter ihrem damaligen Bühnennamen David & Jonathan als Voices Softly Whispering I Love You aufgenommen. Auch Sänger Keith hatte Ende der 60er Jahre schon einige Erfahrung als Sänger bei Plastic Penny (Everything I Am) gemacht.

Die Gruppe veröffentlichte noch eine Handvoll Singles und sogar zwei Langspielplatten, die jedoch keinen nennenswerten Erfolg mehr hatten. Lediglich die Nachfolgesingle Jesahel war 1972 jenseits von Top-40-Platzierungen noch etwas bekannter. Das Lied war im Original von der italienischen Formation Delirium in einigen europäischen Ländern ein Club-Hit.

Für Liveauftritte oder Tourneen war die als reines Studioprojekt konzipierte Formation viel zu groß. Nach einigen erfolglosen Single-Veröffentlichungen löste sich das Projekt 1973 wieder auf.
