Cape Runaway

Cape Runaway ist der östlichste Punkt der Bay of Plenty und der zu ihr gehörigen kleineren Kopongatahi Bay auf der Nordinsel Neuseelands. Das Kap liegt 90 Kilometer nordöstlich von Whakatane und 50 Kilometer westlich von East Cape. Administrativ gehört es zum Opotiki-Distrikt.

Den Namen Cape Runaway erhielt es von James Cook während seiner ersten Reise mit der Endeavour im Jahre 1769, nachdem Māori sich Cooks Schiff in Kanus in möglicherweise feindlicher Absicht genähert hatten und nach einem Kanonenschuss geflohen waren.

Vor dem Kap liegen vier kleine Inseln, die größte davon ist Otarawhata Island. Der nächstgelegene Ort ist Whangaparaoa etwa vier Kilometer südlich.

Das weitere Gebiet um das Kap ist auch ein gleichnamiger statistischer Bezirk beim Zensus. Dieser hatte 2006 1.374 ständige Bewohner. [1]
