Caraquet ist eine kanadische Stadt in der Provinz New Brunswick im Gloucester County. Im Jahre 2006 hatte sie 4.156 Einwohner auf einer Fläche von 68,26 Quadratkilometern.

Die Stadt wurde am Ufer der Chaleur-Bucht der Akadischen Halbinsel errichtet. Der Name der Stadt wird von einem Mi’kmaq-Begriff abgeleitet. Sinngemäß bezeichnet der Ausdruck eine Stelle, an der sich zwei Flüsse treffen. Der Fluss „Caraquet“ und der Fluss „Riviere du Nord“ fließen westlich der Stadt in die Bucht.

Geschichte

Caraquet wurde zuerst durch Gabriel Giraud dit Saint-Jean, einem französischen Händler und Kaufmann, besiedelt. Er heiratete eine Mi’kmaq-Frau und siedelte im unteren Caraquet. 1757, nach der Vertreibung der Akadianer, siedelten sie in oberem Caraquet. Dabei wurden sie von Alexis Landry geführt, nachdem er aus dem südlichen New-Brunswick und Nova Scotia vertrieben worden war. Der ursprüngliche Stadtteil wird jetzt Sainte-Anne-Du-Bocage genannt. Offiziell wurde der Grundbesitz für die Stadt 1774 durch königliche Proklamation 34 Familien akadischer, normanischer und Mi'kmaq Abstammung zugesprochen. Die Stadt bezeichnet sich auch heute noch selbst als inoffizielle Hauptstadt von Akadien. Diesem eigenen Anspruch folgend wird hier im August das jährliche Acadian Festival ausgerichtet.

Wirtschaft

Die Wirtschaft Caraquets wird hauptsächlich durch seine Küstenlage bestimmt. Es gibt einen Fischerei- und Seehafen. Einige Strände und andere touristische Attraktionen, wie das historische Dorf Akadien, sind in der Gegend zu finden.

New-Brunswicks einzige tägliche francophone Zeitung, L'Acadie Nouvelle, wird in Caraquet veröffentlicht.
