Der Carfax Tower in Oxford wurde als Turm der St. Martins Kirche um 1032 errichtet. Während die 1818 umgebaute Kirche 1896 einer Straßenverbreiterung weichen musste, ließ man den Turm als einziges Relikt stehen. Seinen Namen hat der Turm aus dem französischen carrefour (lateinisch quadrifurcus), was so viel wie 4 Wege, d.h. Kreuzung bedeutet. Der Carfax Tower bildet somit das Zentrum der Stadt. Er hat eine Uhr aus dem 14. Jh., bei der prächtige Figuren in römischen Uniformen die Viertelstunde schlagen. Vom Carfax Tower aus hat man einen herrlichen Blick über die Stadt. Seit 1999 ist der Carfax für den allgemeinen Verkehr außer Bussen und Taxis geschlossen.
