Litavis

Litavis war eine keltische Göttin, die von den Lingonen zusammen mit Cicollus (Cicollos) verehrt wurde.

Name

Der Name wird als gallische Entsprechung des indoeuropäischen Götternamens *PltH2uiH2 »Weite, Erde« betrachtet (skt. Prthivī mātā; ae. Folde). Der alte Name für die Erde erhielt sich aber auch in Ortsnamen, die Bretagne heißt auf Walisisch Llydaw.

Verehrung

Die Lingonen hatten ein bedeutendes Heiligtum in Mediolanum (heute: Châteaumeillant), wo Mars Cicollos zusammen mit der Litavis[1] oder der Bellona[2] verehrt wurde. Hieraus kann erschlossen werden, dass Litavis mit der römischen Kriegsgöttin Bellona gleichgesetzt wurde, ähnlich wie Cicollos mit dem römischen Kriegsgott Mars. Allerdings passt diese Gleichsetzung schlecht zu einer Erdgöttin.
