Der Long Island Sound (im Deutschen auch Long-Island-Sund) ist eine Förde im Westen des Atlantiks, der die Insel Long Island an der nordamerikanischen Ostküste vom Festland trennt, das im Wesentlichen zum Bundesstaat Connecticut gehört. Der Sound ist etwa 177 km lang und bis zu 34 km breit. Die durchschnittliche Tiefe beträgt 24 m, die maximale Tiefe 91 m.

Die größte Bucht in der Nordküste Long Islands ist die Smithtown Bay, daneben existieren viele kleinere Buchten und Fjorde. Verbunden sind beide Ufer des Sundes durch Fährverkehr und Unterseekabel; verschiedene Projekte zum Brückenbau sind bisher gescheitert.

Die Städte Bridgeport, New London, Stamford, Norwalk und New Haven in Connecticut liegen ebenso am Sund, wie die New Yorker Stadtteile Bronx und, zu einem kleinen Teil, Queens. Hier, an seinem westlichen Ende, geht der Sund in den schmalen East River über, der die süd-(west)liche Verbindung zum Atlantik darstellt. Durch diese Durchfahrt kam auch der Holländer Adriaen Block, als er 1614 den Sund entdeckte.

Sonstiges

Am 15. Juni 1904 starben auf dem Weg zum Locust Grove (New York) am Long Island Sound über 1000 Menschen an Bord des Ausflugs-Raddampfers General Slocum.
