Ong Teng Cheong

Ong Teng Cheong, Honorary GCMG (chin. 王|鼎|昌, Wáng Dǐngchāng); * 22. Januar 1936 in Singapur; † 8. Februar 2002 ebenda) war vom 2. September 1993 bis zum 1. September 1999 der fünfte Präsident des Stadtstaates Singapur.

Er war der erste direkt (und bisher einzige)[1][2] gewählte Präsident seit der Unabhängigkeit. 1999 wie 2005 wurde Ong Teng Cheongs Nachfolger S R Nathan ohne Wahl direkt zum Präsidenten ausgerufen, nachdem seine Gegenkandidaten disqualifiziert wurden. Deswegen war Ong Teng Cheong bisher der einzige Politiker seit der Unabhängigkeit Singapurs im jahre 1965, der sich einer Direktwahl stellte. In Singapur werden die Kandidaten vorher auf ihre Qualifikation geprüft. Die erste Direktwahl fand 1993 statt. Davor wurden die Präsidenten vom Parlament bestimmt[3]. Er war der Nachfolger von Wee Kim Wee.
