Fast and Furios war der Deckname für eine 2009 und 2010 verdeckt geführte Operation des Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), eine dem Justizministerium der Vereinigten Staaten unterstellte Bundespolizeibehörde.[1] Unter Billigung des ATF durften Waffenshops in Arizona Waffen (u.a. AK-47-Sturmgewehre) an mutmaßliche Strohmänner mexikanischer Drogenkartelle legal verkaufen.[2] Auf diese Weise wurden 1765 Waffen erworben.[3] Mittels minutiösen Nachverfolgens (z.B. Überwachungsteams und Abhöraktionen) dieser Waffen versuchte der ATF mexikanischen Drogenbossen auf die Spur zu kommen. Nachdem bekannt wurde, dass der US-Grenzschutzbeamte Brian Terry durch eine solche Waffe bei einer Schießerei starb,[4] wurde die Operation Ende 2010 nach 15 Monaten eingestellt.
Ein US-Kongressausschuss untersuchte im Juli 2011, wer in der US-Administration diese umstrittene Kriminalitätsbekämpfung veranlasste. Kenneth Melson, Leiter der ATF und verantwortlich für die „Operation Fast and Furious“, trat am 30. August 2011 zurück.[4] Der US-Justizminister Eric Holder sagte, er habe von der verdeckten Operation erst nach ihrem Abbruch erfahren.[5]
