perp walk ist ein Begriff aus dem US-amerikanischen Rechtswesen. Der Begriff leitet sich aus der Wendung “walking the perp” her, wobei “perp” für “perpetrator” (Straftäter) steht.

Zweck

Beim perp walk wird der Verdächtige der Öffentlichkeit in Handschellen oder Gefängniskleidung vorgeführt. Die Medienvertreter haben damit eine Gelegenheit, Fotos oder Filmaufnahmen des Delinquenten zu machen.

Von amtlicher Seite wird offen zugegeben, dass diese öffentliche Zurschaustellung eines Beschuldigten zum Justiz-Ritual gehört. Damit soll auch der Stolz des Beschuldigten gebrochen werden, um so leichter an ein Geständnis zu kommen.

Geschichte

Ursprünglich war der perp walk nur für schwere Straftaten vorgesehen. Doch in den 1980er Jahren wurde er in New York durch Rudolph Giuliani zur Abschreckung auch auf andere Delikte ausgeweitet.

Internationales Aufsehen erregte die als demütigend empfundene Vorführung des IWF-Chefs Dominique Strauss-Kahn im Mai 2011.

Es war auch während eines perp walk, dass Lee Harvey Oswald, der mutmaßliche Kennedy-Mörder, von Jack Ruby erschossen wurde.
