Regius Professor

Regius Professor ist die Bezeichnung eines Lehrstuhls an verschiedenen Universitäten im Vereinigten Königreich und in Irland. Insbesondere gibt es solche Professuren an der Universität Oxford und der Universität Cambridge in England, der Universität St. Andrews, der Universität Edinburgh, der Universität Glasgow und der Universität Aberdeen in Schottland und an der Universität Dublin in Irland. Der Name deutet darauf hin, dass er von einem gekrönten Staatsoberhaupt eingerichtet wurde er also ein königlicher Lehrstuhl ist. In Großbritannien muss der Lehrstuhlinhaber auch heute noch formal durch die Krone bestätigt werden. Je nach Universität gibt es verschiedene Regius Professuren, zum Beispiel für Jura, Klassische Sprachen, Medizin (im älteren Englisch als Physic bezeichnet), Geschichte, Astronomie, Mathematik und Botanik. In den angelsächsischen Ländern ist die Benennung von Lehrstühlen durch die Stifter üblich und das Inhaben eines benannten Lehrstuhls wird häufig an der Universität als besondere Auszeichnung gesehen. Die Inhaber der Regius Professuren genießen besonders Ansehen in Großbritannien.
