Streets of Laredo (auch The Streets of Laredo oder The Cowboy's Lament) ist ein altes amerikanisches Traditional und gehört neben Sweet Betsy from Pike zu den bekanntesten Standards der Country-Musik.

Herkunft
Die Ballade hat ihren Ursprung im irischen Volkslied The Unfortunate Rake, das ca. 1790 entstand. Von Irland gelangte das Stück nach England, wo es unter dem Titel The Trooper Cut Down in His Prime vom Tod eines jungen britischen Soldaten erzählt, der an Syphilis stirbt. Seefahrer brachten die Melodie mit in die USA, wo sie von Cowboys zu Streets of Laredo adaptiert wurde. Diese Fassung spielt im Wilden Westen und erzählt die Geschichte eines jungen Cowboys, der angeschossen wurde. Im Sterben liegend erzählt er seine Geschichte einem vorbeikommenden Kameraden, der der Kleidung nach zu urteilen ebenfalls ein Cowboy ist. Er äußert Wünsche für sein Begräbnis und hofft des Weiteren, durch sein tragisches Schicksal den anderen Cowboy eines Besseren belehren zu können.
Verwendung
Das Lied wurde im Laufe der Zeit von unzähligen Musikern in unterschiedlichen Genren aufgenommen, in der Regel jedoch von Folk-oder Country-Musikern. Der Jazzstandard St. James Infirmary ist eine Adaption des Liedes. Einige berühmte Fassungen stammen von Jim Reeves, Marty Robbins, Eddy Arnold, Joan Baez, Burl Ives, Arlo Guthrie, Chet Atkins, Paul Westerberg und Johnny Cash. Letzter nahm das Stück gleich zweimal auf, zuletzt 2002 auf American IV: The Man Comes Around.

Take me to the valley, there lay the sod o'er me,
I'm a young cowboy and know I´ve done wrong.I see by your outfit that you are a cowboy.
These words he did say as I boldly walked by.
Come sit down beside me and hear my sad story;
Got shot in the breast and I know I must die!My friends and relations they live in the Nation:
