Twinkies sind amerikanische kleine Kuchen mit Cremefüllung, die von der größten amerikanischen Bäckerei Hostess Brands hergestellt und vermarktet werden.

Geschichte

Twinkies wurden in Schiller Park (Illinois) etwa 1930 von James A. Dewar, einem Bäcker der Continental Bakeries (heute Hostess), erfunden. Als Dewar damals bemerkte, dass viele Maschinen, die cremegefüllte Erdbeerkuchen herstellen, außerhalb der Erdbeer-Saison stillstanden, entwickelte er einen Snack mit Bananenfüllung und nannte ihn Twinkie. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs wurden Bananen knapp und die Bäckerei ersetze die Füllung durch Vanillecreme. Diese Änderung erwies sich als so erfolgreich, dass man auch nach dem Ende der Bananenknappheit bei der Vanillecreme blieb.

Kulturelle Rezeption

Im Film Zombieland ist der Protagonist Tallahassee besessen von der Idee, einen Twinkie zu finden. In der TV-Serie Gilmore Girls spielen Twinkies als Lieblings-Nachspeise der beiden Protagonistinnen eine Rolle (bspw. Staffel 2, Episode 1: „Der Antrag“, Originaltitel: „Sadie, Sadie“). Auch in der Comedy-Serie Roseanne werden Twinkies mehrfach erwähnt – etwa als Bestechungsmittel für Schulhofschläger.
