United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women, deutsch: UN Frauen) ist ein Organ der Vereinten Nationen, dessen Gründung durch einstimmigen Beschlusses der Generalversammlung der Vereinten Nationen vom 2. Juli 2010 beschlossen wurde.[1]

Vorläuferorganisationen

UN Women vereint in Zukunft die Arbeit von vier vormals getrennten, vormals mit Geschlechtergleichstellung und Empowerment befassten Teilen des UN Systems:[1]

Aufgaben

UN Women hat zwei wesentliche Rollen auszufüllen. Einerseits soll es zwischenstaatlichen Institutionen wie der Commission on the Status of Women bei der Formulierung von Policies, globalen Standards und Normen zur Seite stehen, mit der Zivilgesellschaft kooperieren und den Mitgliedsstaaten auch durch technische und finanzielle Unterstützung bei der Implementierung dieser Standards helfen. Zum Anderen soll es dem System der Vereinten Nationen ermöglichen, Rechenschaft über ihr Commitment bezüglich der Geschlechtergleichstellung zu geben und weltweiten Fortschritt in dieser Richtung zu erfassen.[1]

Leitung

Am 14. September 2010 wurde Michelle Bachelet, die Kinderärztin und frühere chilenische Präsidentin von UN Generalsekretär Ban Ki-moon, im Range einer Unter-Generalseketärin der UN, in das Amt der geschäftsführenden Direktorin (Executive Director) der UN-Women-Organisation berufen. [2]
