City Slang

City Slang ist ein deutsches Independent-Label mit Sitz in Berlin. Es wurde 1990 von Christof Ellinghaus gegründet.

Geschichte

Ellinghaus stammt aus dem ostwestfälischen Städtchen Beverungen. Dort schrieb er mit Freunden das Musikfanzine "Glitterhouse" (später wurde daraus ein gleichnamiges Label). Mitte der 1980er Jahre ging er zum Studium nach Berlin. Hier betreute er kleine Bands auf Tour und gründete die Agentur "Sweatshop", zu deren ersten Aufgaben die Betreuung einer Tour der US-amerikanischen Band Nirvana gehörte. Weitere US-Bands, die er in Deutschland und Europa auf Tour schickte, waren Mudhoney, Soundgarden, The Walkabouts, Eleventh Dream Day, Thin White Rope, Urge Overkill oder die Flaming Lips.

Letztere sprachen ihn an, dass sie ein Label in Europa brauchten, woraufhin er City Slang als Sublabel des Berliner Labels Vielklang gründete und seit 1992 als eigenständiges Label führt.

Die Firma feierte im November 2010 das 20. Jahr seines Bestehens.[1]

Das Label vertritt deutsche, US-amerikanische und kanadische Bands in Europa. So gibt es unter anderem eine enge Zusammenarbeit mit dem Chicagoer Independent-Label Thrill Jockey und dem kanadischen Label arts&crafts.

Cityslang ist Mitglied des Kooperationsnetzwerkes der Berliner Musikwirtschaft Berlin Music Commission.[2]
