Die Begriffe Dixieland oder kurz Dixie sind gebräuchliche Synonyme für die Südstaaten der USA. Populär wurde der Begriff durch die gleichnamigen Hymne (I wish I was in) Dixie.[1]

Ursprung

Zum Ursprung des Namens gibt es unterschiedliche Theorien:

  • In einem Teil Louisianas wurde Französisch gesprochen und die Citizens' Bank of Louisiana gab Zehndollarnoten heraus, die aufgrund ihrer Werthaltigkeit besonders begehrt waren. Auf der Rückseite war das französische Zahlwort "dix" (zehn) gedruckt.[2]. Die Noten wurden unter dem Begriff Dixies bekannt.
  • Auf Manhattan Island, wo Sklaverei bis 1827 erlaubt gewesen war, soll ein "Mr. Dixy" Sklaven gehalten haben, diese aber sehr fair behandelt haben. Sein Land wurde als Dixies Land berühmt.
