Dorothy Mackaill

Dorothy Mackaill (* 4. März 1903 in Hull, England; † 12. August 1990 in Honolulu, Hawaii) war eine US-amerikanische Schauspielerin der späten Stummfilm- und frühen Tonfilmzeit.

Biographie

Die Schauspielerin arbeitete zunächst als Tänzerin und ging Anfang der 1920er zu den Ziegfeld Follies nach New York. Sie wurde bald für den Film entdeckt und spielte rasch eine ganze Reihe von Haupt- und Nebenrollen, meist für die Gesellschaft First National, wo sie bald zu einem Star der zweiten Reihe aufstieg. 1924 wurde sie unter die WAMPAS Baby Stars des Jahres gewählt. Mit dem Wechsel zum Tonfilm schien Dorothy Mackaill zunächst eine große Zukunft zu haben, doch weder der Erfolg von The Office Wife, einer romantischen Komödie, in der Mackaill sich in den über 35 Jahre älteren Lewis Stone verliebt noch das Melodrama Safe in Hell, in dem sie unter der Regie von William Wellman als Prostituierte ihr Leben opfert für den Mann den sie liebt und das wegen der sehr grafischen Darstellung der Hinrichtung Probleme mit dem Zensor bekam, halfen ihr zu einem wirklichen Durchbruch. Sie beendete ihrer Karriere Mitte der 1930er in einigen B-Filmen.

Der rasche Verfall der Popularität von Dorothy Mackaill praktisch innerhalb eines Jahres veranlasste die bekannte Journalistin Elizabeth Yeaman am 16. Dezember 1931 in ihrer Kolumne zu schreiben:

Dorothy Mackaill is hitting the old familiar trail of vaudeville very shortly. Dorothy's contract will not be renewed at Warners, and her last picture on the present contract will be made at Columbia. After that, instead of free lancing, she will go on the road in an act of impersonations. Who ever would have suspected her of a talent for mimicry? [...] Strangely enough, Dorothy Mackaill was one of Warners' biggest box office attractions a little over a year ago. In The Office Wife she developed a tremendous following, but her later pictures have not been of such high calibre. Her popularity waned with the vogue for molten heroines. She may develop into a new type of actress as a result of her vaudeville experience, and if she "clicks" on the road you may be sure the producers will give her a warm reception when she returns to Hollywood. More and more screen players are fluctuating between pictures and vaudeville. And sometimes they make more money on the road than they do on the screen.
