Das EUREKA-PROMETHEUS-Projekt ("PROgraMme for a European Traffic of Highest Efficiency and Unprecedented Safety, 1987-1995) war das bislang größte Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprojekt zum Thema führerlose Autos. Umgerechnet auf heutige Zahlen wurden mehr als eine Milliarde Dollar von der Europäischen Gemeinschaft investiert. Zahlreiche Universitäten und Autohersteller nahmen an dem Projekt teil.
Prometheus profitierte von der Teilnahme von Ernst Dickmanns, einem Pionier führerloser Fahrzeuge, und seinem Team an der Bundeswehrhochschule München und seiner Zusammenarbeit mit Daimler-Benz. Ein erster Gipfelpunkt wurde 1994 erreicht, als ihre beiden Roboterfahrzeuge VaMP und VITA-2 (auf der Basis des 500 SEL) mehr als 1000 Kilometer auf einer mehrspurigen Autobahn in Paris im normalen Verkehr mit Geschwindigkeiten bis zu 130 km/h zurücklegten. Damit bewiesen sie, dass automatisches Fahren in mehreren Spuren, Konvoifahren, automatische Verfolgung anderer Fahrzeuge, Spurwechsel und Überholvorgänge autonom durchgeführt werden können.
Der nächste große Erfolg wurde 1995 erreicht, als Dickmanns' VaMP insgesamt 1758 km von München bis Odense und zurück autonom zurücklegte. Dabei wurden bis zu 175 km/h erreicht und Fahrzeuge automatisch überholt. Ein menschlicher Fahrer kontrollierte die Aktionen zur Sicherheit. Die größte ohne menschlichen Eingriff zurückgelegte Strecke war dabei 158 km; durchschnittlich alle 9 km war ein Eingriff nötig.
