Earl of Essex

Earl of Essex ist ein erblicher britischer Adelstitel in der Peerage of England, der seit etwa 1139 von mehreren Familien, aber auch Einzelpersonen gehalten wurde, von denen der bekannteste Robert Devereux, 2. Earl of Essex (1566–1601) ist.

Die Earlswürde wurde erstmals im 12. Jahrhundert für Geoffrey de Mandeville geschaffen. Nach dem Tod des dritten Earls erlosch der Titel, wurde aber 1199 an Geoffrey Fitzpeter erneut vergeben, der eine Verwandte der Mandevilles geheiratet hatte. Mit dem Tod seiner Söhne erlosch der Titel erneut.

Die dritte Verleihung ging 1239 an Humphrey de Bohun, 2. Earl of Hereford, dessen Vater Henry de Bohun Maud, eine Schwester des letzten Earl geheiratet hatte. Beide Titel erloschen 1373 erneut.

Die bekannteste Ernennung ist die von Robert Devereux 1572, die folgende aus dem Jahr 1661 die bislang letzte.

Mit dem Tod des neunten Earls 1981 trat eine unklare Situation ein, die erst 1989 geklärt werden konnte, da zunächst nicht geklärt war, wer Titelerbe war.

Die weiteren Titel der Earls of Essex sind: Viscount Malden, of Malden im County of Essex (verliehen 1661), und Baron Capell, of Hadham im County of Hertford (verliehen 1641). Der Titel Viscount Malden wird vom Titelerben als Höflichkeitstitel geführt.
