European Digital Library

Europeana ist eine Internet-Plattform mit Suchfunktion in einer Auswahl europäischer digitaler Bibliotheken, Museen und Archive. Das Projekt basiert auf der Infrastruktur und den Erfahrungen der European Library.

Gründung und Aufgaben

Europeana wurde im Rahmen von i2010 von der Europäischen Union gefördert. Das Projekt begann 2007 unter dem Namen European digital library network – EDLnet (Netzwerk Europäische Digitale Bibliothek) und ging am 20. November 2008 online. Das Portal soll Zugriff auf zunächst zwei Millionen Filme, Fotos, Gemälde, Töne, Karten, Manuskripte, Bücher, Zeitungen und Textdokumente bieten, die Zahl soll bis 2010 auf über 6 Millionen steigen.

In den Jahren bis 2010 sollen ca. 120 Millionen Euro aus EU-Forschungsrahmenprogrammen für die Digitalisierung von Bibliotheken verwendet werden. Dem Europeana-Projekt selbst sollen jährlich 2 Millionen zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Zum Start im November 2008 kamen 52 % der Europeana-Dokumente aus Frankreich, aus Deutschland nur etwa 1 %. Die Programmdirektorin Jill Cousins führte dies auf „technische Probleme“ zurück.[1]

Panne in der Pilotphase

Nachdem das Portal am 20. November 2008 in einem Prototypen für die Allgemeinheit erreichbar online ging, kam es aufgrund von Überlastung zu Problemen bei der Erreichbarkeit, seit dem 21. November war es vorübergehend nicht mehr möglich, auf das Portal zuzugreifen. Auf der Website wurden Zugriffszahlen von 10 Millionen Seitenaufrufen pro Stunde als Grund für die Probleme genannt.[2] Seit dem 23. Dezember 2008 ist die Seite wieder online, mit einer vervierfachten Server-Kapazität. Allerdings ist der Zugang derzeit (März 2009) noch eingeschränkt. So sind etwa die Communities nur als Demo abrufbar und diverse Seiten sind trotz Auswahl der deutschen Sprache nur in Englisch vorhanden.
