Eustace (Ely)

Eustace († 1215 in Ely) war Lordkanzler und Siegelbewahrer von England (1197–1199) unter der Regierung König Richard Löwenherz.[1] Er war Dekan von Salisbury und ab 1197 Bischof von Ely.[2]

Leben

Eustace wurde in Paris erzogen. Von Geburt war er wahrscheinlich Normanne. Eustace wurde im Januar 1199 von Richard I zu Philipp II um ihn das Ende der Waffenruhe mitzuteilen. Mit dem Tod von König Richard und der Thronbesteigung von Johann Ohneland wurde er als Lordkanzler durch Hubert Walter ersetzt. Der König setzt ihn aber weiterhin für Diplomatische Missionen ein, so war er unter anderem noch mehrmals beim König von Frankreich.

Eustace starb während der Messe im Februar 1215. Er ist in der Nähe von Ely Cathedral dem Altar von St. Marien beigesetzt wurde.
