Fernao do Po

Fernão do Pó, auch Fernão Pó, Fernando Pó oder Fernando Póo genannt, (15. Jahrhundert) war ein portugiesischer Seefahrer und erforschte die afrikanische Westküste.

Laut Überlieferung entdeckte er 1472 die Insel Bioko im Golf von Guinea. Bis 1973 trug sie den Namen ihres Entdeckers Fernando Póo. Von 1973 bis 1979 wurde sie in Macías Nguema Byogo umbenannt, 1979 bekam sie ihren heutigen Namen.

Auch im nahe gelegenen Kamerun wurde Pó für die Namensgebung einiger Plätze verwendet. Über ihn und sein Leben ist sehr wenig bekannt. Er gehörte zu einer Anzahl von Seefahrern, die während dieser Zeit im Auftrag des Königs Afonso V von Portugal den Golf von Guinea erforschten.
