Freeze Cycle Processing

Freeze Cycle Processing (abgekürzt: FCP ) ist ein Verfahren bei dem Werkstoffe durch eine Langzeitbehandlung (Kühlung) mit flüssigem Stickstoff bei einer Temperatur von ca. 77 Kelvin (= -196° Celsius) eine Gefügeveränderung erfahren. Durch diffusive Prozesse während der Haltezeit im tiefkalten Zustand werden innere Spannungen reduziert.

Die bei 77 Kelvin zur Verfügung stehende thermische Anregungsenergie für Platzwechsel im Kristallgitter ist zwar deutlich geringer als z. B. beim Härten, andererseits werden durch kälteinduzierte Schrumpfung des Gitters die hinderlichen Potentialschwellen überproportional abgebaut.

Gefügebaufehler werden so ausgeheilt und bei Werkstoffen (vor allem härtbarer Stahl) die Restaustenit enthalten wird dieser in Martensit umgewandelt.

FCP behandelte Klingen und Produktionswerkzeuge zeichnen sich daher durch deutlich verbesserte Standzeiten aus.
