Gloria Patri

Gloria Patri (lat. Ehre [sei] dem Vater) sind die Anfangsworte der so genannten kleinen (im Gegensatz zur großen, dem Gloria in excelsis Deo) oder trinitarischen Doxologie. Sie stammt aus dem 4. Jahrhundert.

Verwendung

Das Gloria Patri schließt im Stundengebet alle Psalmen und Cantica ab. In der Heiligen Messe und in evangelischen Agenden seit dem 19. Jahrhundert bildet es den Abschluss des Introitus. Es entfällt in der Karwoche. Im Rahmen von Magnificat- und Psalm-Kompositionen (siehe Vesper) ist es häufig vertont worden. Zudem findet es sich als Schlussvers (Doxologie, auch sogenannte Gloria-Patri-Strophe) vieler Hymnen und Kirchenlieder.

Traditionell ist es üblich, sich beim ersten Halbvers (Ehre sei dem Vater und dem Sohn und dem Heiligen Geist) zu verneigen, bei der Doxologie eines Hymnus verharrt man während man des ganzen Verses in der Verneigung.

Das Gloria Patri ist auch Bestandteil des Rosenkranz-Gebets, es schließt jeweils ein Gesätz ab.
