Die Rektions- und Bindungstheorie beschreibt eine Version von Noam Chomskys Syntax-Modell der generativen Grammatik. Der Terminus geht auf seine 1981 veröffentlichten Lectures on Government and Binding zurück. Er bezeichnet den Entwicklungsstand der Theorie in den 1980er Jahren.
Sie beschäftigt sich hauptsächlich mit syntaktischen Regeln. Im Prinzip gibt es drei Stufen der syntaktischen Repräsentation:
- die Tiefenstruktur (D-Struktur, von Deep Structure)
- die Oberflächenstruktur (S-Struktur, von Surface Structure)
- die phonetische Form (PF) und die logische Form (LF)
Die D-Struktur ist eine direkte Projektion von Information aus dem Lexikon (insbesondere betrifft das z. B. Verb-Argumentstruktur), die S-Struktur ist eine aus der D-Struktur abgeleitete Zwischenebene und der Input für sowohl die phonetische Form als auch die logische Form. Die logische Form ist eine aus der S-Struktur abgeleitete Repräsentationsebene, auf der z. B. Quantifikatoren-Skopus eindeutig dargestellt ist. Die drei Stufen stehen zueinander in Beziehung durch eine Regel für eine einfache Bewegung (move α). Zum Lexikon einer speziellen Sprache stehen sie in Verbindung durch das Projektionsprinzip. Es gibt bestimmte Regeln und Einschränkungen, die in entsprechenden Teilgebieten der Theorie betrachtet werden, wie Government-Binding-Theorie, Theta-Theorie und anderen.
Chomsky entwickelte seine Theorie später weiter und ersetzte sie in den 1990er Jahren teilweise durch sein Minimalistisches Programm, das versucht, sich auf ein Minimum an Typen und Regeln zu beschränken.
