Gregorius Melissenus

Gregor III. (* unbekannt auf Kreta; † 1459 in Rom; auch: Gregor(ios) Melissenos, Beiname: he mamme, manchmal auch (wohl unrichtig): ho mammas) war ökumenischer Patriarch von Konstantinopel.

Gregor nahm von 1438 bis 1439 als Vertreter des Patriarchen von Alexandrien am Konzil von Ferrara-Florenz teil und wurde dort zum Protosynkellos ernannt. Gregorios Pneumatikos wurde am 7. Juli 1445 Patriarch von Konstantinopel.

Als Anhänger der Kirchenunion musste er sich großem Widerstand entgegenstellen, dem er 1450 nachgab und über den Peloponnes nach Rom auswich, wo er 1459 starb. Bei Quellen, die von einem unionsfeindlichen Gegenpatriarchen Athanasios sprechen, handelt es sich offenbar um Fälschungen.
