International Institute for Sustainable Development

Das International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD, auf deutsch etwa: Internationales Institut für nachhaltige Entwicklung) ist ein kanadisches Forschungsinstitut, das sich mit dem Problemfeld der nachhaltigen Entwicklung beschäftigt. Es versucht, Erkenntnisse aus Umwelt- und Entwicklungsforschung zusammenzutragen und beide Felder verbindende, integrierte Konzepte zu entwickeln.

Gegründet wurde das IISD 1990. Es arbeitet seitdem auf einer wirtschaftlich profitfreien Basis. Gegenwärtig sind beim IISD etwa 150 Personen angestellt, die Arbeitsstellen in über 30 Ländern besetzen. Es bestehen organisatorische Verbindungen zu über 200 Partnereinrichtungen weltweit. Das Jahresbudget des Instituts beträgt ca. 12 Millionen Kanadische Dollar (umgerechnet knapp 8 Millionen Euro).

Bekannt ist das IISD vor allem für seine tagesaktuelle Berichterstattung von nahezu allen größeren internationalen Umwelt- und Entwicklungskonferenzen. Dazu gehören beispielsweise die regelmäßig stattfindenden Treffen der Vertragsstaaten des Kyoto-Protokolls, der Kommission für nachhaltige Entwicklung, der Biodiversitäts-Konvention sowie zahlreicher weiterer Übereinkommen.
